Police in western Germany carried Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and other protesters away Tuesday from the edge of an open coal pit mine where they demonstrated against the ongoing destruction of a village to make way for the mine’s expansion

Thunberg tweeted on Friday that she was in Lützerath to protest the expansion, and asked others to join. On Saturday, Thunberg addressed the activists. “The carbon is still in the ground,” she said. “And as long as the carbon is in the ground, this struggle is not over.”

Thunberg, a self-proclaimed “autistic climate justice advocate,” has spent many years in the public eye warning about climate change.
After video emerged of police detaining her, some Twitter users claimed the arrest was staged while others compared it to when Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., was arrested protesting abortion rights.

Thunberg and other protesters were detained for identification, said police, who added that they had not been arrested.
“A high profile is not a carte blanche,” a police spokesman told Britain’s Sky News when asked about Thunberg’s detention.

After their IDs were checked, the group, which included Thunberg, were released, police said.
